23rd September – PHE letter to parents and guardians

Please find below a message from Julia Weldon, Director of Public Health and the Hull City Council Public Health Team, 22.9.20

“Our most recent weekly rates of Covid-19 infection in Hull have fallen since last week’s update to 7.7 per 100,000 – so that is about 20 new cases in one week in the city. This is much lower than rates for both England and the Yorkshire and Humber region. Fewer than 1 in 100 people who take a Covid-19 test in Hull at the moment actually turn out to have it, which is good news. However we know that the difficulties getting a test mean that some infections are not being picked up.

We remain very fortunate to have such low numbers but we do expect that these will rise soon, as they have across the country. Please continue to take care of yourselves and each other by following the latest guidance.”

Confirmed Positive Case

Please find below a message from Julia Weldon, Director of Public Health and the Hull City Council Public Health Team 22.10.20

“Our most recent 7 day rate of Covid-19 in Hull is 119.7 per 100,000 population, which is about 311 new cases in a week. This is still the lowest rate in the region and lower than England, but it is much higher than it was a few weeks ago. We are expecting it to keep going up. Our 0-15 year olds continue to have the lowest rate. Our 16-30 year olds still have the highest rate, but we are also seeing an increase in older age groups now. Many of our schools have seen cases of Covid in their community, but there has been only a very small amount of spread within schools. This shows that the measures in place are working well to protect our children and staff. We know it is disruptive when bubbles need to isolate but it plays a really important role in stopping the virus from spreading. We are very grateful for all your support with this.

I hope you enjoy your half term break, and please do continue to look after yourselves and each other by following the guidelines.”

UPDATE LETTER – OCTOBER HALF TERM

October 2020

UPDATE LETTER – FACE COVERINGS ON SITE

Face Coverings

Please find below a message from Julia Weldon, Director of Public Health and the Hull City Council Public Health Team, 9.11.20

“Sadly, the most recent Covid figures for Hull show a very, very fast increase in our number of people testing positive and we expect this to continue to get worse in the coming days. In the last complete 7 day period (27 October to 2 November) our 7 day rate per 100,000 people was 545.1. This means that about 1,420 people in Hull tested positive in those 7 days. This is now more than double England’s 7 day rate of 240.3 per 100,000 people and it means we have one of the highest rates in the country. We expect our rate to be around 668 per 100,000 in 3 days’ time (about 1,740 cases).

This means that we are in a completely different place to where we were before half term. We need to look after ourselves and each other more than ever now. We will continue to work with schools when they have confirmed cases and to support with preventative measures. If someone in your household has symptoms or tests positive, or you are asked to isolate as a contact, please stay at home. Thank you for your continued support with this.”

Please find attached flyers from Hull City Council, containing important guidance on what to do if your child or someone in your household has symptoms of or tests positive for Coronavirus.

“Our rates of Covid in Hull peaked on 16th November and have been falling steadily since then. Our most recent rate is 195 cases per 100,000 in the 7 days to 4 Dec. This is about 500 people testing positive for Covid in a week in Hull. For comparison, in our worst week we had over 2,000 new cases.

It’s a huge relief to see the numbers coming down. However, they are still much higher than we were in the summer, when we were seeing fewer than 10 new cases in a week, so there is still a long way to go.

It’s clear that the second lockdown really helped to reduce transmission of the virus in the city and we are concerned that the end of the lockdown will lead to rates starting to increase again. To prevent this happening, we will all need to continue to follow the Tier 3 measures and minimise mixing with others. Thank you for your continued efforts and sacrifices.”

Message from Julia Weldon, Director of Public Health, and the public health team 11th Jan 21

“I’m sure you will all be aware from the national news that the Covid situation across the country is the worst it has ever been. This is a really difficult time for everyone with the new lockdown to adjust to, and wanting to do the best we can to keep ourselves and our loved ones safe.

Fortunately, in Hull, our 7 day rate of new cases at the moment is less than half the national rate, and five times lower than in the worst affected areas. We haven’t seen much of the new variant here yet.

Our most recent 7 day rate in Hull is 301.4 per 100,000 which means that in the week to 6 Jan, 784 people in Hull tested positive. These numbers have been going up since mid-December, but have fallen a little in the last few days. For comparison, the England rate is 650.9 per 100,000 and is still rising. Our highest rate in Hull was in mid-November when it was 780 per 100,000 (over 2000 new cases a week).

Vaccines have started to be given to our over 80s, and will be rolled out to the most clinically vulnerable residents over the next month. Access to asymptomatic testing is increasing and is being rolled out in secondary and 16+ settings. We understand that national plans for asymptomatic testing for primary and early years staff are being developed.

So, my message to you is that our rates remain moderately high, but thankfully not as bad as other areas. This means that if we continue to minimise mixing and stick to the lockdown and school/college measures we have a chance of escaping the worst locally. So please continue to do everything you can to look after yourselves and each other.”
