Spanish

At St Nicholas Primary School, we believe that learning a language plays a vital role in developing children’s oracy, literacy and cultural awareness. Learning Spanish helps pupils understand their own culture and appreciate those of others around the world.

We believe that early exposure to a foreign language supports faster acquisition and builds strong foundations for future language learning. Teaching Spanish in primary school also prepares children confidently for the Key Stage 3 languages curriculum.

How Spanish Is Taught at St Nicholas

🗣 Spanish is taught across Key Stage 2, using the Language Angels scheme of work.

This provides:

  • clear progression in speaking and listening

  • structured vocabulary development

  • strong support for teacher subject knowledge

  • high-quality resources to enhance learning

Teaching Approaches

🎲 Games
To build vocabulary through repetition, reading, writing, speaking and listening.

🎭 Role-play
Linked to real-life situations children may encounter in the future.

🎵 Action songs and rhymes
To support phonics, memory and pronunciation.

📖 Reading and writing activities
Using high-quality, age-appropriate materials.

⭐ Positive reinforcement

Curriculum Progression & Impact

📘 Teaching is based on the 2014 National Curriculum, delivered through Language Angels and adapted to suit our school context. Teachers are supported with:

  • clear unit overviews

  • progression grids

  • structured lesson content

As a result, children will:

  • understand that languages have different structures

  • develop the four key skills: speaking, listening, reading and writing

  • gain insight into Spanish culture

  • take part in enrichment activities such as food tasting, sports and assemblies

  • make cross-curricular links with Geography and History

  • transition confidently into Key Stage 3 languages
