Religion and World Views at St Nicholas

Religious Education at St Nicholas Primary School

St Nicholas Primary school follows the guidelines of the East Riding of Yorkshire’s Agreed Syllabus for Religious Education. We also cover aspects of RE in assemblies, Faith Week, Harvest Festival, Easter and Christmas. RE aims to give children the knowledge, critical thinking skills, open minded and respectful attitude with which to investigate the world of religion and beliefs, and make their own decisions about what this means to them, whilst empathising with what it means to those who hold those beliefs. It also aims to enable children to grow spiritually by developing their awareness and skills of reflection, their experience of awe and wonder and their appreciation of stillness and silence.

Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)

At St Nicholas Primary School, children look at different religions from the very beginning of foundation stage. The children focus on five main religions: Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism, Islam and Sikhism. Throughout the year, children look at different religious celebrations through their unit Special Times. They also look at Special Places, Special People, Special Books and Special Things. Children have lots of opportunity to discuss and explore these religions throughout foundation stage.

Key Stage 1

In years 1 and 2, the children focus on two religions and look at other world views. The main religions in key stage 1 are Christianity and Islam and Humanism as their non-religious worldview. This provides the children with the opportunity to build on their prior knowledge from Early Years Foundation Stage. Throughout the year, children are able to look at different religious celebrations and have dedicated units for Winter Celebrations and Spring Celebrations. We aim for all children to develop their skills in creating their own personal knowledge.

Key Stage 2

In years 3 to 6, the RE curriculum builds and expands on prior knowledge and understanding. Throughout the year groups, the children will continue to look at different world religions, focusing on their viewpoints and religious celebrations. All year groups study Christianity, Islam, Hinduism and Humanism as their non-religious worldview. Throughout the year, children are able to look at different religious celebrations and have dedicated units for Winter Celebrations and Spring Celebrations. In key stage 2, we aim for all children to further develop their skills in describing, analysis, explanation and appreciation when investigating world religions. We also aim for all children to develop their own thoughts and opinions and develop their personal knowledge.

How can I support my child with Religious Education?

To support at home, you can provide the opportunity for children to learn about different world religions and world views. Children can experience this by learning about different religious celebrations when they occur throughout the year, such as Divali, Christmas, Easter and Harvest Festival.
